How to Make Your Tires Last Longer

Your tires won’t last forever and there are steps you can take to ensure that you have long-life tires on the roads around Altoona. To make them last longer, you will have to take certain precautions, including getting them checked and making sure they are in good working order. Stuckey GMC is here to explore how to make your tires last longer and lengthen the tire tread life in general below.

What Causes Tire Tread Wear?

If you are driving around State College, different tread wear patterns can spotlight specific vehicle issues:

  • Inner & Outer Tread Wear: Also called ‘camber wear’ or ‘toe wear,’ excess wear on the outer or inner part of your tire points to a misalignment.
  • Center Wear: Your tire is probably over-inflated. It’s best to check your owner’s manual for the right PSI.
  • Edge Wear: Underinflation is causing your issues.
  • Cupping Wear: This is a diagonal scalloping of your tire. Such a problem indicates serious issues with your suspension system and you need to schedule a service appointment ASAP.
  • Patchy Wear: If the tread wear on your tires appears in patches, they are probably out of balance and it’s time to see a mechanic.

Tips for Getting Long-Lasting Tires

Follow these tips as part of your regular maintenance schedule and they will last much longer around Johnstown, Huntingdon, and beyond:

  • Check Your Tire Pressure Regularly: A tire can lose up to a pound per square inch of air pressure each month. Be sure to check once a month and keep an eye on the right levels via your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). In winter, they can lose more, while in the summer, they tend to gain more.
  • Rotate Your Tires Every 5,000 Miles: Tires won’t wear out evenly, especially if you own a GMC vehicle with all-wheel drive. Rotating your tires allows the ones that work the most to take a break.
  • Get Your Tires Balanced: Once your tires are rotated, make sure to have them balanced. If your weight is distributed more to one wheel than the other, this can also lead to uneven wear.
  • Check Your Vehicle Alignment Twice a Year: If your wheels are misaligned, they will wear out faster. This is easy to notice as the steering wheel can shake. This can occur over time, or if you hit a pothole or the edge of a curb while driving.
